Gargiulo shot this image in some tide pools in New South Wales, Australia.

“In one of the shallowest parts of the [tide] pool I noticed an octopus. I placed my camera near its den and the octopus started interacting with it,” Gargiulo told Underwater Photography Guide.

Gargiulo’s image also won first place in the wide-angle category.

Off the Pico Island in Portugal, Gilles Auroux captured this image of a blue shark, a species the photographer said is one of “the most elegant species of sharks.”

You could call it art for art’s sake — plus $1,000 a month.

San Francisco plans to start paying 130 local artists $1,000 a month starting in May through the fall in a pilot program announced on Thursday.

It follows other so-called “universal basic income” efforts being launched in California amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“From the first day the pandemic arrived in San Francisco, we knew that this health crisis would impact artists, and artists of color in particular,” Mayor London Breed said Thursday while announcing the program, FOX 2 of the Bay Area reported.

Breed said the city’s artists “make San Francisco special, and bring so much life and energy to our city. The arts are critical to our local economy and are an essential part of our long-term recovery. If we help the arts recover, the arts will help San Francisco recover.”

As for curating an actual exhibition in a highly visible gallery, few, if any museums would turn over the keys to a bunch of high school students.

But that’s exactly what the Cleveland Museum of Art did in its outstanding current show, “Laura Owens: Rerun,’’ on view at the Transformer Station gallery, the museum’s part-time satellite in Ohio City, through Sunday, May 30.

The exhibition is a high-spirited riff on the theme of “time travel,’’ a focus chosen by participating students from Cleveland-area schools in collaboration with Owens, a Northeast Ohio native known for multilayered paintings that blend gestural abstraction with images taken from pop culture, newspaper graphics, advertising, and cartoons.

The show combines a selection of works
