Art Show, Gallery, Photography, Textiles The Artery is pleased to present “Impressions,” mixed media fiber art and photography. Gary and Cathy Cederlind use photography and fiber art to illuminate the world as they see it. Cathy Cederlind is known for her exquisite bead embroidery that she transforms into wearable art. During Covid lockdown, however, she experimented with the Korean papermaking technique of Joomchi. She seals several layers of mulberry paper with water to form one strong, texturized sheet. Cathy then takes the paper and felts it. Cathy’s technique allows the felted Joomchi to do what it will. At this point she can use any combination of acrylics, pastels, silk cocoon, tyvek and hand stitching to enhance each sheet. When the paper is embellished the result is lovely, layered mixed media fiber art. Through photographs, Gary reinterprets what he sees in the world around him. To Gary the question is “what if?” Looking at a landscape or still life he immediately wonders what it would look like as a double exposure, in infrared (unseen light), in black and white, or as a composite. Using these techniques, his prints reflect an abstraction of the natural and man-made world.
